The Stories

Sarah is a teacher at a local primary school, and uses her car every day to get to work. It’s only a small Renault, so she can nip in between the enormous tanks driven by the local mums, but she’s always careful on every journey. Everyone feels safe when she drives the car, which means that she’s called on to do lifts a bit too often for her liking.

A few days before half term, on her way back from teaching, a huge 4x4 cuts her up, causing her to swerve and hit a lamppost. Fortunately, she’s ok, but her Renault has an enormous dent in the side, and the left headlight is completely smashed. She didn’t catch whoever did it, and can’t afford to get it fixed with cash. Her insurance has it covered, but because of the report, she loses her no claims discount. This safe, reliable driver has suddenly had her premium shoot up because of someone else’s reckless driving, and Sarah now has to pay far more.

Sarah

When he was seven, John built a cardboard car to drive around the house. Now that he’s seventeen, he wants to drive for real. Everything’s in place: his dad has already bought John an old, reliable VW Polo, complete with fluffy dice and offensively pungent air freshener, and, with some arm-twisting, has even agreed to take John out for his very first drive. But there’s a problem. John’s dad can’t afford the insurance.

In fact, the insurance for the Polo costs more than the car itself. Why? Because John is a seventeen year old boy, and as such belongs to an extremely broad group that is more likely to have an accident. But John doesn’t drink, and although he’s usually late for school, he isn’t worried about that enough to break the speed limit. Still, his insurance doesn’t account for this, and that’s why John’s second-hand car is still in the driveway. John’s dad can’t afford to insure it, so all it does is sit there, smelling of air-freshener and going nowhere.

The MyDrive solution

With MyDrive, John isn’t just another boy-racer; he’s an individual, someone that his insurers know they can trust. The better John drives, the more affordable his insurance for his dad. Because of this fairer, individually priced insurance, the Polo can finally get out of the driveway and onto the road. MyDrive can even help improve John’s driving, as he can go online and find out exactly what his strengths and weaknesses are on the road. Now he knows where he needs to improve, and he passes his test first time round.

Now that John has his driving licence, he’s off to visit his friends all the time. But John’s mum is concerned – he crashed his bike and broke his arm when he was eleven, and since then, his mum has sworn that if he does to the car what he did to the bike, she’ll break his other arm.

Fortunately, with MyDrive, John’s mum can check up on how he’s driving, wherever and whenever. She can see how safe his driving is, and can compare this to other drivers of the same age. She’s even warned him that if his score slips too low, he’ll have to start paying for his own insurance.
